"Happy families are all alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." It's not stretching the point to apply Tolstoy's famous quote to include families afflicted with the disease of addiction. When addiction arrives, often without warning, it takes with it the substance abuser and the abuser's family. The toll is most apparent on the addict, but to a very real extent, the family pays as well. And the price paid is high. Heartbreak, mistrust, fear, and anger descend, and families become the grimmest of collateral damage. This now "unhappy family" becomes unhappy, each in its own way.
The way forward for the abuser is clear - even if not to them - treatment and a life long commitment to sobriety. The family is also in need of healing, and before they can be of any help with their loved ones, this healing must occur. The substance abuser and the family are in the same boat -- the grip of addiction, truly a family disease. Time, patience, and counseling can lead to wisdom and, ultimately, happiness.
And as Tolstoy reminds us, "Happy families are all alike."
